Danube River Weathering Steel Girder Bridge Crossing in Austria

Jidian Construction Materials Co., Ltd. engineered and fabricated the weathering steel girder system for the Danube River Bridge crossing near Linz, Austria. The 6,200-ton steel package utilizes EN 10025-5 S355J2W weathering steel that forms a self-protecting oxide layer, requiring minimal maintenance over a 100-year design life. The bridge's three-span continuous girder design accommodates heavy vehicular traffic while withstanding seasonal flood conditions and ice loads during Austrian winters.
Our engineering team performed advanced finite element analysis to optimize the girder cross-sections for both strength and material efficiency, achieving a 10% reduction in steel tonnage versus the initial design. Pre-fabricated segments were match-assembled at our facility, then transported by barge down the Danube for rapid on-site erection using balanced cantilever construction methods. The bridge achieved full load certification per Eurocode EN 1991-2 in March 2023.
Key Data: 6,200 tons weathering steel | 3-span continuous girder | 100-year design life | S355J2W | Eurocode EN 1991-2 certified | FEA-optimized sections
